The TWELVE GIFTS of MR. RAZZLES: from ADOPTION to ANGEL #4

Fourteen years ago, my life changed dramatically. In the space of six short months, I became a Reiki master practitioner, started working at my local humane society, and received the gift of communicating with animals.

While working at the shelter, I realized a deep connection with dogs, especially those who had not been treated respectfully. I set out to help them and, as many of you may have experienced, it was the dogs who helped me. I may have contributed the food and a warm place to live, but the dogs have taught me so much and offered many emotional gifts, such as these from my beloved Cocker Spaniel.

In this season of giving, I recently reflected on the many gifts I received from this beloved member of my doggie pack, and will offer those in the first twelve days of December as The TWELVE GIFTS of MR. RAZZLES: from ADOPTION to ANGEL.

Mr. Razzles is one of the dogs

who have guided my healing journey.

Howling Timekeepers

Why do I need a timekeeper? you might ask.

Well, because I have a tendency to try to squeeze

"one more thing" into my schedule

before I need to leave for an appointment.

Or, even worse,

before doggie meal times and snacks.

So at least one of my doggie herd

has the role of timekeeper

to start nagging me

when meal time is getting close.

Hudson excelled at this.

He also excelled at howling,

a tradition my doggie herd has continued.

Occasionally when I pull into the driveway,

I hear the howls begin as one by one,

my doggies join in.

I just stand and smile,

enjoying my welcome home chorus.

The Border Collie dog in my book,
THE ROCK STAR,
was inspired by my dog, Ace.

EXCERPT from
THE ROCK STAR

Shannon pressed her fingertips to her temples. Whatever it took, she would not revisit the past. One sure way to drown out the memories was physical activity. Shannon changed into an old pair of jeans and a baggy sweatshirt, then fetched a crowbar out of the tool shed.

Upstairs, a circular turret crowned the second story of the Victorian house. As a young child, Shannon had played within these stained plaster walls. As a teenager, she came here to dream, pulling aside the faded brocade draperies to stare at the half-circle of stars around her.

Tonight’s mission wasn’t quite so fanciful.

Shannon slammed the iron bar through a section of cracked plaster, and set about purging Geoff Chastain from her life once again.

The sun had crested the horizon before Shannon paused to survey the piles of crumbled plaster. She stretched and breathed deeply, letting her mind race with plans for refinishing the room. A soft rose color on the walls would set off the solid oak moldings around the floor-to-ceiling windows framing a semicircular view of the city. Unfortunately, a hundred and twenty years of paint had to be stripped away from the moldings to find their original beauty.

"Hey, Jasper, why don't you go start the coffee while I clean up?" Shannon scratched the dog's ears. Training her dog to push the start button on her coffeemaker with his nose had been a stroke of genius. Of course, she could use the automatic timer, but Jasper seemed so pleased with himself that Shannon didn't have the heart to take that task away from him.

As Shannon walked toward the bathroom, the chime of the doorbell brought her to an abrupt halt. No one paid a social call this early in the morning. Something must be wrong.

Shannon dashed down the stairs and threw open the door.

Gratitude Rediscovered

Another "gratitude frame" I rediscovered:

Sophie was a Giant Schnauzer,

nicknamed Madame General

because she loved to be

the "fun police."

Whenever the other dogs were playing,

she would run outside and bark

until they stopped.

Sophie is on the cover of my book,

I Want to Have the Heart of a Dog.

An intriguingly different look at one woman's recovery from several lifetimes of abuse, betrayal and violent deaths--guided by dogs whose hearts contain the simple and  miraculous knowledge of the Universe.

Too good not to share again...

I rediscovered these
GRATITUDE FRAMES
featuring doggies who have been part of my life.

Most of these beautiful spirits in fur
are angel doggies now,
so looking at these brought a bit of an ache to my heart.

But...

These are too good not to share again!

So during November of this crazy year,
I'm going to share short stories and anecdotes
of a few of the doggies who have owned me.

A COLLIE
was my first love.
And Collies have been a special part of my life,
coming to support and love me
in the most difficult times.

If you want to read more about the doggies
who have shared my life, check out this book:

Filled with love, lessons, and healing.
However, as one reader said,
"Keep the tissues handy."
Because doggies don't live as long as humans.

Coming August 1!

CHRISTMAS PAWSIBILITIES (Book 4 of Aunt Maddie's Doggone Misadventures)

With their world destroyed and their space ship malfunctioning, the dogizens of Planet Canid have little choice but to crash land on Earth...into the barn next door to Aunt Maddie’s castle.

While former playboy Ryan Madison and elfenchaun Dori plan their Christmas wedding, an online scam to help extraterrestrials has the Blue-Haired Ladies arguing about whether aliens are real. When a space ship crash lands into a neighbor's barn, Dori and Aunt Maddie help deliver the Canine Queen's puppies and hide them in their modern-day castle.

Furious, the evil commander of the Geeks in Green tracks the aliens for tortuous experiments. Using Uncle Horace's invention of portable cloaking devices, Ryan and his zany family sneak into GIG headquarters to foil this dastardly plan while the Blue-Haired Ladies stage a Nertz tournament as a distraction.

STREET DOG DREAMS (Book 5 of Aunt Maddie's Doggone Misadventures)

Aunt Maddie’s latest misadventure takes her and Uncle Horace to an abandoned village in Sardinia, Italy in search of a new dogdom for the Royal Canines, where they become caught up in rescuing dogs captured by a crime lord who wants all the kibble for himself.

Using a retro-fitted space ship, they work cheek to jowl with their niece, who walks the streets in a dog suit to rescue street dogs who dream of home and family.

A passionate Sardinian actress joins the rescue efforts when her beloved poodle is dognapped. She rallies her show dog friends to send the crime boss to the dog house–er, prison–and give street dogs the loving homes of their dreams.

Excerpt from Chasing the Legacy

Layla tossed the stick across the green expanse of lawn beside Waring House. The raggedy but clean brown dog dashed after it, brought it back and dropped it at Layla's feet. Then sat and cocked her head expectantly. With a soft laugh, Layla tore off another chunk of the sandwich and fed it to Solstice, then threw the stick again.

In the few days the dog had been with Layla, they had relaxed into an easy companionship of finishing the set-up Layla's print shop area interspersed with frequent play breaks.

And Layla had come up with a name for the dog: Solstice.

During one of their play breaks, Beth arrived. "You have a dog!"

Beth's warm voice and delighted smile brought the brown mixed breed dog waggling cautiously toward her.

A hitch developed in Layla's breathing as she stared at Beth's belly. Where her pregnancy would soon start to show. "She adopted me when we were in Baker City. I named her Solstice."

"As in summer solstice?"

"As in a turning point. She didn't have a home and I haven't had a dog in awhile. Thought it was a good deal for both of us."

Dogs Have Sniffed Their Way Into My Books

HISTORY OF QUANTUM CANINES
(continued)

No surprise most of my books feature dogs
(and other animals!).

The first book I wrote, The Rock Star,
featured a Border Collie mix inspired by
my own dog of the same breed.

Buy digital formats of
The Rock Star

The second book of this trilogy, The Bodyguard,
featured "a dog. Perhaps crossed with a shaggy, blond bear."
Ironically, a dog matching this description
showed up at the humane society where I worked--
after that book was written.

The Bodyguard

The Leader of the Band, the third book of the Rock'n'Romance
trilogy featured a cat--but one with a distinct personality as well...

The cat raced out of the room and back down the stairs.
Lauren found it sitting in the kitchen.
The cat glanced at Lauren, then stared pointedly at the cabinet.
"You charge uninvited into my house and expect me to feed you?"
The cat meowed plaintively without moving its gaze from the cabinet.
A good look at the cat swayed Lauren’s decision.
Its coat was a dull orange and ratty-looking,
with tufts of fur gone in places.
One ear was jagged on top, as if a foe
had chewed off part of it in a fight.

Of course, as our hero and heroine transform their lives,
the cat also transforms...

The cat was no longer the mangy critter
that had shown up at the Victorian house a few weeks ago.
Its fur had grown in thickly and
its belly had become slightly rounded.

Fur against my face...

HISTORY OF QUANTUM CANINES
(continued from last week)
Fur against my face and
the soft smell of a dog
curled protectively around me
existed before my first memories of this life.

Mom used to tell stories of me as a toddler, sleeping with my head pillowed on our Collie’s belly; of my brave furry protector forcing an uncle back into his car because I was outside without a parent. Never mind we lived out in the country where only relatives or nearby neighbors came to visit. Tippy took his duties seriously, and executed them well. For ten years, he was a companion, a pillow, and a protector.

Though I didn’t realize it at the time, Tippy was the beginning of my life-long love of dogs, and set the standard for all the furbabies who would be part of my journey.
