When I was doing chores this chilly morning, one of the brown hens was on the nest. (My chickie girls have grown up together from chicks, so they share a nest for laying eggs or maybe use two.) She didn't come down to eat, but stayed on the nest. On one of my trips back and forth, she stood up. I got the message she was protecting the eggs she and the other chickie girls had laid until I gathered them. They understand I gather eggs every day, and that is their "payment" for food and shelter, and it also brings great delight to the human (me). So I got an egg carton and carefully gathered the eggs out from under her and thanked her for keeping them safe. She hopped off the nest and went about her day--her job was done. Another reminder that animals know far more than most humans give them credit for, and making me feel gratefully humble for the gift of the critters who share the farm with us humans.
